News: 18-year-old driver dies after vehicle crashes into Don River

TORONTO, ON — An 18-year-old man succumbed to injuries suffered in a two-vehicle crash Saturday morning that sent his car into Toronto’s Don River, reports CBC.

The fatal accident took place near Lakeshore Boulevard and Cherry Street, prompting a response from Toronto Police and first responders at around 8:43 a.m.

Authorities said the teen was behind the wheel of a 2014 Grand Cherokee traveling west on Lakeshore Boulevard East, west of the Don Roadway. At one point, he lost control of the Jeep, causing it to strike a 2023 Ford F150 pickup truck, which was heading east on Lakeshore Boulevard East, just east of Cherry Street. The force of the crash sent the Jeep off the roadway and into the Don River.

While crews were able to extract the Jeep from the water at 12:24 p.m., the vehicle was found unoccupied. A person believed to be the teen driver was not recovered from the area until 1:12 p.m. The patient was rushed to a local hospital in life-threatening condition and was later pronounced deceased.

The driver of the Ford, who was also transported to the hospital, was treated for minor injuries.

An investigation remains in progress.
