News: 2 left seriously hurt after TTC streetcar derailment, crash in downtown Toronto

TORONTO, ON – Three people were injured, two seriously, Saturday morning, June 1, when a Toronto Transit Commission streetcar derailed in downtown Toronto and became involved in a crash, reports CP24.

The incident occurred near Frederick Street and King Street, in the city’s Old Town neighborhood. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene at around 9:32 a.m.

It was not immediately apparent what caused the streetcar to go off the tracks, but photos taken at the scene indicate the streetcar collided with a utility pole. One of its passengers was seriously injured, and another suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Both were transported to a local hospital.

One other vehicle was also involved in the collision, and its driver was also taken to a hospital for injuries considered serious.

Officials had roads and sidewalks in the area blocked off during the emergency response. The public was warned that wires may be down as a result of the wreck, and that the closure could in place for hours. Multiple TTC routes were also impacted.
