RICHMOND HILL, ON – York Regional police arrested a man in his 70s after he crashed into a Richmond Hill daycare that killed one toddler and injured nine others on Wednesday.

The collision took place around 3 p.m. at First Roots Early Education Academy located on 11384 Yonge Street, CBC reports. The man in his 70s appeared to have operated a full-sized Hyundai electric vehicle, which was left with some damage and a dangling license plate.

Toronto police confirmed that there were 96 children inside the daycare at the time of the collision. Among the kids, a one-and-a-half-year-old boy died, and three children were injured.

Three adult staff members were also hurt.

One child is in critical condition, while the rest of the other victims are recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the man was “charged with one count of dangerous operation causing death and two counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm.”
