UP Express train hits, claims lives of 2 teens in Toronto’s York district

TORONTO, ON — Two teenagers were pronounced deceased late Monday after being struck by a UP Express train in northwest Toronto’s York district, according to Global News.

A press conference held by Toronto Police Inspector Keri Fernandes indicates that the teens, a 16-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl, were near Eglinton Avenue and Weston Road when the incident unfolded some time after 10:00 p.m.

Fernandes said at least 200 passengers were aboard a train heading westbound to Toronto Pearson International Airport after having left Union Station. It’s unclear why the teens were on the tracks at the time, but both victims were hit and killed between the two stations.

Following the event, the UP Express site alerted customers that train service was expected to be suspended for an extended time because of “a fatality.”

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
