3 sent to hospital after 7-vehicle pileup on Hwy 401 in Scarborough

TORONTO, ON – Three people were injured as a result of a fiery crash involving 7 vehicles, including three tractor-trailers, on Highway 401 in east Toronto, reports Toronto Star.

The multi-vehicle wreck occurred on the westbound lanes near Neilson Road.

Ontario Provincial Police said one tractor-trailer collided with the back of another, and the impact sent the second truck crashing into the back of a van, causing the van to catch fire.

Officials did not specify how the other four vehicles were impacted, but the driver of the first truck was stuck in wreckage for an extended time before firefighters were able to extricate them. That patient and two others were transported to a local hospital for injuries considered non-life-threatening.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collision. No charges have been reported as of this writing.
