What is an open wound, and why is it dangerous after a motorcycle crash?

Open wounds are characterized by skin penetration, whether this is caused by a bone puncture, external penetration, or road rash. Incision wounds occur from sharp objects penetrating the skin along a fine edge, such as injuries from metal or glass. Lacerations are similar, but produce ragged edges or torn skin.

These types of injuries can cut deeper and involve damage to muscles, tendons, and ligaments as well. Abrasive wounds (or abrasions) are similar to “road rash” type injuries and result when the skin is scraped off by contact with gravel and asphalt. Puncture wounds are characterized by a small entrance wound by a sharp and narrow object through the skin, such as bone or external debris.

Open wounds are particularly dangerous because of the long term risk of infection. These types of wounds may bleed profusely, and if not promptly treated, can lead to significant blood loss or even nerve damage. Open wounds are blatantly obvious after an accident and require immediate medical attention.
