News: Man, woman in their 70s hurt in Clarington crash caused by loose tire 

CLARINGTON, ON – A 70-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman were injured in a crash caused by a loose tire on Highway 401 on Monday.

Ontario Provincial Police told CBC that the incident unfolded around 10:30 a.m. Police determined that an SUV driver, traveling east on the highway, lost a wheel and a tire assembly, which went over into the westbound lanes and struck a westbound vehicle.

The driver of the westbound vehicle, a 70-year-old man, sustained minor injuries, while his female passenger, also 70, suffered serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

Ornge’s air ambulance rushed the female passenger to a trauma centre for further treatment.

Ornge personnel told the source that one person, who was critically injured, was airlifted to Lakeridge Health to Sunnybrook, but did not confirm if it was the female passenger who was taken to that trauma centre.

No other injuries were reported.

Police have since charged the driver of the eastbound vehicle for detached parts coming from their SUV.

Authorities closed Highway 401 West and East for the overall scene clean-up process.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
